Marilyn
Roberts is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for the
Division of Graduate Studies and Research in the College of
Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida.
She earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism from Southern Methodist
University, a Master's in Mass Communication from Abilene Christian
University, and a Ph.D. in Communication from the University
of Texas at Austin.
Her
research interests include political advertising, agenda setting
and political communication, as well as international and cross-cultural
advertising. Her work has appeared in Political Communication,
Journalism Quarterly, Mass Communication Review, the Proceedings
of the American Academy of Advertising, and The Harvard International
Journal of Press and Politics, and forthcoming in the
Journal of Advertising Education. She has authored several
book chapters on political advertising.
She
served as the American Academy of Advertising's Vice President
in 1998-99, as the competitive papers chair and editor of the
1999 Proceedings. She has chaired the AAA's International Advertising
Education Committee, as well as serving as chair of the International
Advertising Pre-Conference. She currently co-chairs the summer
2000 Asia-Pacific Conference, sponsored by AAA.
Dr.
Roberts also has been an active member in several other academic
organizations. She served as editor of the Political Communication
Report, a quarterly joint newsletter of the International
Communication Association and American Political Science Association's
Political Communication Divisions. She was a previous executive
officer in the Advertising Division of the Association for Education
in Journalism and Mass Communication.
In
1999 and 2000, she supervised the University of Florida's team
in the International Advertising Association's InterAD IV student
competition. The team was named the United States/Canada Regional
Champions both years. In 1999, she received a Teaching Incentive
Program (TIP) award for outstanding teaching in the College
of Journalism and Communications. In October, 2000, she will
receive the 2000 Gutenberg Award as a distinguished alumna by
the Department of Mass Communication of Abilene Christian University.
Prior
to returning for her doctoral work, Dr. Roberts owned an advertising
and public relations firm in central West Texas. She was a media
consultant to a U.S. Congressman for over a decade. Among her
previous awards and honors for civic leadership, she was named
an Outstanding Young Woman of Texas by the Texas Junior Chamber
of Commerce.
